Do you trust your government?
According to a recent Pew Research poll, only 17% of Americans trust their government. Why would so many people be so cynical about the elected officials they’ve chosen? To answer that, all you have to do is turn on the 24-hour news cycle.
Today we are witnessing very troubling things. A political coup based strictly on partisan interests. A never ending war that many of us – myself included – have lost friends in. State government officials who believe the title they hold will protect them from the potential wrath of the people they swore to represent. All of these situations are fueled by the political games both parties have been comfortable playing for decades.
It’s like watching an episode of Game of Thrones without the genitals flopping about to distract me. In this issue of Essay Wednesday, we’re going to look at how the system is screwed.
A Double Edged Sword
When throwing out the big C word (coup that is) most people think of a violent overthrow of the sitting government by the military or revolutionary militia like in countries in Africa or Asia. However the Democratic Party, who have sworn since Trump’s inauguration to remove him, are attempting to force out a sitting, legitimately voted-in President because of the absolute embarrassment they’ve endured during his tenure. While not violent, it is a political coup.
And although Trump is (like most U.S. presidents in recent history) a shady bastard and war criminal, the Democrats are attempting to remove him from office for something that isn’t even illegal. The most interesting part of this political dog and pony show is that they are passing off “hearsay evidence” as being more important than physical evidence. If we’re prosecuting people based on rumors, where does this absurdity end? Several Democrats including Rashida Tlaib have been openly gunning for President Trump from the beginning; it’s a farce.
Cuts Both Ways
The Republicans aren’t innocent either. The R’s seriously tried to kick an elected official out of office for getting a blowjob from an intern. It’s not like the Democratic vultures can put Trump on trial for war crimes for supporting the mass murder of the people of Yemen. That would make former President Obama a war criminal for starting 3 new drone wars that killed countless innocent people. It would also make former President George W. Bush a war criminal for being duped into invading the wrong country. The cycle would continue until every politician was in prison for war crimes. This would completely delegitimatize our government and strip them of their power. Wouldn’t want that now would we?
Unless the Sword is Sheathed
Speaking of the never ending wars: the wars in the Middle East are old enough to enlist to fight in the war in the Middle East. The knowledgeable gentlemen on the Biting the Bullet podcast brought up a great point recently. The war in the Middle East has been going on for so long that if a service member had a child at the start of the war, the child could’ve enlisted when they graduated high school and then deployed to fight in the same war their parents had fought in.
I myself went to basic training with several soldiers whose parents deployed to the Middle East. Last week, after reading the Afghanistan papers, my suspicions, as well as several other vets I know, were confirmed. We have no idea what we are doing, and the “War on Terror” is and unwinnable war according to multiple high ranking officers.
The money spent and lives lost have been for nothing. Families have been torn apart. Lives and friendships shattered. Veterans drink themselves into a stupor every day to either forget what they’ve seen or soften the pain of lost friends, only to have “patriotism” shoved down their throats by those who have no idea what they are talking about to make themselves feel better.
But it’s ok because according to Nancy Pelosi, were fighting for women’s rights in the Middle East, right? Because we definitely have our shit together. I’m so happy my friends have to die for such a noble cause. Apparently according to every Republican I talk to, “that’s what they signed up for.”
It’s Not Just In The Middle East Though
On the topic of rights, politicians closer to home have gone from slowly eroding our rights away (i.e. California) to blatantly stripping away our rights illegally.
If you are unaware of the situation in Virginia, Governor “Blackface” Northam and his cronies are passing extreme anti-gun laws prohibiting things such as private sales of firearms, training people to use firearms, loosely and questionably defined ‘paramilitary’ groups, and the oh so scary “assault rifle.”
What’s ironic about the banning of ‘paramilitary’ groups is that it was meant to ban militias, but the state police website claims to be a paramilitary group itself.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the second amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The instructions are written on the box on this one ladies and gentlemen. The lads and I @flintlocks4freedom don’t advocate violence, but, we strongly encourage to not lay down and be tread upon. I don’t know about you all, but I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees.
A Common Theme
What do all of these have to do with each other? The coup, the wars, and the removal of rights? They all stem from one thing: the political class believes they have all the power because of their positions. This my friends is a charade. It is an illusion that we ourselves helped them create by allowing the oppressors to get away with all that they have for so long.
One example is the Patriot Act. Out of fear, we allowed the federal government unrestricted access to every bit of privacy we used to have. It was just renewed last week during the impeachment hearings. Osama bin Laden has been dead for years and ISIS is all but destroyed, so why do we still need it?
I believe that the veil is being lifted from the eyes of the American people and the lies we tell ourselves everyday are sounding more ridiculous by the minute. People are fed up with the dog and pony show the tyrants display for their own amusement. The situation in Virginia is just the beginning. I certainly hope that the rest of the nation will wake up and follow the citizens’ of Virginia’s example and start taking active steps to turn the tide.
